FREE LUNCH BUFFET!!!
Company Lunch at TODAI, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, B2.
When I heard that my company is having Christmas lunch at TODAI, I immediately went online to look for reviews. The comments on TODAI were mostly positive, so YAY, looking forward to the buffet 🙂
17 December 2014, Christmas Lunch at TODAI
I reached office at about 10:30, checked Facebook, read abit of news here and there. Before I actually got to work, it’s 11:30 already and we cabbed to MBS. LOL should have just come at 11:30.
The range of food was quite wide. Most were Japanese, some Italian and local.
I dived into the sushi section first, since it’s carbs so I have to stuff it in first to last longer. There were a lot to choose from.
It was a little disappointing that the Sushis were not described. For example, one was called Lion King, and it didn’t say what’s inside. And there were so many sushi with foreign names, I couldn’t be asking the chef at the counter for each of them. He probably would be annoyed too. So I decided to try 1 of everything on my first round
Overall, it was quite good. Could use a little extra freshness but it wasn’t bad. I’d give it a 7/10. If only there was Unagi sushi…. The Spicy Salmon Roll tastes a little weird. The sauce and the salmon don’t really go well together
Next was some Takoyaki, Butterfish in Yuzu, BBQ Pork Belly, BBQ Pork, Enoki Bacon, Wings.
Firstly, the Takoyaki was horrendous. It was almost tasteless, and really mushy. Regretted taking 2. The Butterfish, for some strange reason, tastes like Martabak Manis for the first half a second, and then like fish. I kinda liked it. Then next bite, the Yuzu sauce kicks in. Since I’m not an acid fan, it didn’t really appeal to me. The butterfish itself was good though. The Wings were undermarinated. Most of the flavour was only outside, the meat inside was quite bland. The pork products were better. First dish that has more solid texture to it, the bite felt more real. HAHAHA. Taste-wise, they were more flavourful. Maybe because they were thinner. Bacon Enoki was gorg and tasty! The teriyaki sauce over it sealed the deal. Last one was the (fish) on a stick. It had a Japanese name but I can’t recall. It had really good texture and flavour. Overall, in this section, I have to say I love the Fish on a stick (Because the other fish had yuzu sauce) and the Enoki Bacon most.
Third round, I went for Sashimi. Only Salmon was served. I took about 15 pieces. Was really disappointed because about 2/3 of them were quite tough. Only a couple were soft and firm.
There was a station serving Roasted beef, pork, wings and sausage cocktails. 3/4 of the time it was empty except for the cocktails. The roast beef was good. But the problem is that they cut it immediately after removing it from the flame. All the juices and flavour spilled. It was still good though. I served mine with black pepper sauce, which I prefer to be thicker and more peppery, but the flavour profile of any grilled meat and black pepper is almost perfect so no much complains here. Just that the station was almost always out of beef that I only got my portion the 4th time I visited the station
At this point, I was full. I know it wasn’t a lot, but my mom bought me a large Mee Pok for breakfast. So the noodles are just leaving the stomach, making less room for the buffet. HAHAHA I originally wanted to try the crab legs next (last), because I didn’t want to get my hands dirty halfway and had to go to the toilet. But 2 of my colleagues who ate crab quite often said that the crabs weren’t that good, and adding on to the fact that I was rather full, I decided to skip and go to dessert.
The dessert was mouth-watering. The Chocolate Mousse was soft and delicious while the Chocolate Gateau was rich and just makes me want more. Creme Brulee was really satisfying. Not too rich or creamy. Green Tea Cake was average while the Wine Pudding proves that wine and pudding should never go in one dish.
Overall, I think the experience was worth the price, considering the location too.
